Watch of the Day – Review of the Bulova 97B122 Wilton Chronograph

The Bulova Precisionist has almost become a household name – at least, when absolute accuracy is the topic of course. The Precisionist range of watches from Bulova have made a name for themselves as the most accurate in quartz timepieces, even rivaling Breitling's Superquartz™.

Precisely, these watches offer a yearly variance of 15 seconds, making these watches 10 times as accurate as the average quartz watch. That's pretty intense I'd say. However, it gets even better. The chronograph versions like the Bulova 97B122 Wilton can actually time events with breakdowns of 1/1000th of a second. Impressed right? Well so was I and I hadn't even gotten to the look of the watch.

Even though this is a quartz watch, the Bulova 97B122 moves like a mechanical watch. This is achieved through the shape of the quartz crystal, which normally is a double pronged crystal but in the Precisionist is a triple pronged quartz crystal. The movement is made and assemble in Japan.

The Bulova 97B122 Wilton Chronograph is made from rose gold ion plated stainless steel. The tone of rose gold has been shown to complement human skin tones exceptionally well. The prominent main crown is textured in a swizzle design and flanked on either side with the chrono-pushers. At the 8 position is another pushpiece responsible for changing the mode of the central seconds hand from running seconds to the chronograph. The look of the watch is finished with a black alligator embossed leather strap, which gives this watch a sophisticated aesthetic. The case dimensions come in at 47mm for the diameter, and just 7mm for the case thickness.

The striking black dial features rose gold toned applied Arabic numerals, and rose gold toned feuille shaped hands. The subdial at the 12 position counts 1/10th and 1/100th of a second for the chronograph. The subdials at 9 and 3 indicate the chronograph minutes and hours respectively, while the retrograde display shows the 1/1000th of a second reading. At the 4:30 position is a neat date aperture. Completing the dial is a tachometric scale on the vaulted flange.
I really like this watch – not just because of its accuracy and functionality but also because of its classic design. Even though the dial looks busy, the Bulova 97B122 Wilton Chronograph is quite legible. What do you think about this chronograph?
